Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social support and countertransference management abilities on burn-out amongst play therapists and to examine the independent influence of countertransference management abilities on burn-out amongst play therapists; whilst controlling for the effects of social support. The subjects of this study comprised 215 play therapists. The collected data were analyzed by means of multiple and hierarchical regression analysis, using the SPSS 22.0 statistical program. The results revealed that when the play therapists had higher levels of social support (the support of colleagues and families), a lower level of self-insight and a higher level of anxiety-management in countertransference management abilities, the degree of burn-out was lower. Furthermore, the play therapists¡¯ countertransference management abilities (their self-insight and anxietymanagement abilities) had an independent influence on burn-out, whilst controlling for social support. These results suggest that both the countertransference management abilities and social support available to play therapists can operate as protective factors when it comes to the degree and level of the burn-out experienced. However, countertransference management abilities are more effective than social support when it comes to the alleviation of burn-out amongst play therapists. Therefore, in order to prevent and protect burn-out amongst play therapists``, adequate education and training should be provided.
